Professions
Professions are the means by which characters make their ways in the world. They define a certain number of basic skills for that character, skills needed by the character for her survival. Some skills are common between different professions, while others are unique to a particular profession. A list of professions follows, including their skills, their spells (if any), and the careers open to them. More information on careers can be found on the careers page.
Warriors
Warriors make their way in the world by the strength of their muscles and the swiftness of their swords. They are experts with weapons and often are masters of strategy. The principal attribute of a warrior is strength, as he needs to lift and use his weapons and carry the weight of his armor for long periods. Good scores in dexterity and constitution also are desirable.

Wizards
Wizards command staggering energies and make dangerous opponents. The power to control magical energies comes from the mind and as such Intelligence is very important. All wizards have the ability to cast numerous offensive, defensive, and informative spells. Many make a career as adventurers, and use their talents to recover lost and forgotten magical lore, legendary magical items, and hopefully large sums of money. After a certain level a wizard may choose to specialise in a particular branch of magic (e.g. conjuration, invocation, enchanting to name the most common).

Clerics
Any religious line sought by a cleric must stand in direct correspondence to his chosen faith. From his/her god will he/she gain the greater abilities and prayers to stand against the harder enemies of the god's faith. Of course such power brings a good deal of responsibility with it including a strict codex the person has to live up to.
A follower of a dark god could be requested to sacrifice his own blood twice a day, while a light deity might ask the rescue of an innocent. Etc. Whatever the cleric does, he may NEVER stray from his alignment and never forfeit the path of his god. This would result in a loss of faith, and a cleric without faith... well, it's like bringing a ball of straw to the red dragon. In order to obtain your career, you will have to ask your guildmaster about the god you are planning to follow. Note that you have to have the religion already and that you have to have a fitting alignment.

Templars
Some fighting men ally themselves directly with one of the religious groups of Ayreon by joining a military order within their particular religion. As such, they become known as Knights of the Temple or Knights Templar. Templars may enter the service of a deity for a fixed period or, more often, for life. Sometimes a knight will become a templar for a time as a penance for oath breaking or for violating some other taboo. All military orders demand absolute obedience and a high standard of material prowess, that knights stay under the command of the temple authorities, and live within the temple precincts. It is their duty to provide guards for the temple and for important religious dignitaries, and to provide whatever military force might be required by the heads of the religion for the destruction of heresies, the prosecution of holy wars, and the protection of the faithful from persecution or infidel attacks.

Rangers
Rangers are independent rural characters. Their lives may have been spent tending animals, or roaming the woodlands or mountains. Outdoorsman, hunters, masters of woodcraft, rangers are the guardians of the forests. In addition to having excellent fighting skills, they are also wielders of natural magics. Some rangers have been known to call upon the wilderness to aid their cause and be able to camouflage themselves beyond detection. Their ability to ambush opponents makes them deadly foes. Rumours tell that they practice their abilities in the forest west of Midgaard.

Necromancers
Necromancers are evil wizards, concerned with the magical power that can be drawn from the world of the dead. Necromancers can commune with the spirit of the dead, and may be able to summon undead creatures to do their bidding. Because of the nature of their work, necromancers are shunned by most people, hated and feared. Necromancers are never able to work openly except in the most decadent or lawless areas of Ayreon. Elsewhere, necromancers hide out in ruined villages and towns where the local cemeteries provide them with the raw materials essential to their disgusting art. Necromancers are invariably chaotic evil; no other character would dare dabble with the souls of the dead. Therefore no Necromancer is protected by the laws.

Scribes
The scribe is a specialized kind of spellcaster who does not know any spells by heart but rather extracts spells from the various magic items he collects on his journeys. Spells from scrolls, staves, wands and potions can be analyzed and their formula written down to spellbooks, which form the scribe's repertoire of spells. Unlike every other profession, scribes do not specialize further by choosing a career.
