Religion describes the god or goddess to whom a character gives allegiance, how the character in many ways views the world, and the skills and spells the character may expect in his or her career.
On Ayreon there are fourteen gods and goddesses representing various aspects of the world. Some represent good and evil, others represent war and peace, and still others stress sentient activities and natural states. Some of these supreme beings are viewed differently among different peoples, and will even grant powers to their priests based on those views.
Generally, characters choose a god that best represents their views. A character who is evil might choose Kulthis, Father of Lies, but another evil might choose Oonouyugh, God of Pestilence and Decay. There are three gods of good, three of evil, and the remainder are neutral or without alignment.
If a character chooses to follow a god (worship is optional for most characters -- priests, templars, and monks must choose a god, and ninjas are forbidden from doing so), that god will sometimes bestow benefits on the character. Priests, templars, and monks can expect additonal powers in accordance to their beliefs; laypeople can expect to benefit from certain godly potions, blessings, and occasionally a full restoration when a co-worshipper gains in power.
Again, not including the various sects of religions, the number of gods on Ayreon is fourteen. They are as follows:

Two of the gods, Kulthis and Shorkam, have alternative sects. They are as follows:
